Excess heat from energy-intensive industries is often suitable for use in district heating systems but is usually unutilized. A detailed overview of the potentials available in the EU is now provided by a database of the sEEnergies project. In Germany, 29 petajoules of excess heat from industrial sites could be used, which corresponds to the demand of more than half a million households. The information is available as maps and downloadable datasets.

New publication on energy-efficiency potentials and costs in Taiwan’s cement industry

06.06.2016

In a joint research project, researchers from ITRI and Fraunhofer ISI used the FORECAST model to assess energy saving opportunities and costs in Taiwan’s cement industry. The cement industry is the second most energy-intensive sector in Taiwan.

The simulation results reveal that by 2035, eighteen energy efficient technologies could result in 25% savings for electricity and 9% savings for fuels. This potential totally amounts to about 5 GJ/year, of which 91% can be implemented cost-effectively. Policy makers should support a fast diffusion of these technologies. Additionally, policy makers can tap further saving potentials. First, by decreasing the clinker share, which is currently set regulated to a minimum of 95%. Second, by extending the prohibition to build new cement plants by allowing for replacement of existing capacity with new innovative plants in the coming years. Third, by supporting the use of alternative fuels, which is currently still a niche in Taiwan. The complete article can be accessed here.
